I found
a Japanese Scarecrow festival site - unfortunately quite a bit of it was in
Japanese, however it was nteresting to note that in many places the scarecrows
are dressed as warriors to 'fight off' the crows. The crow is also a symbol
of bad luck in Japan.
'Cutting from the website" - Kaminoyama Scarecrow Festival -This festival eloquently represents Yamagata, where main crop is rice. At Tsukioka park, the people from all over Japan enter the scarecrow contest with traditional type of scarecrows or modern ones which often reflects the current interests of the Japanese people. (Note : In searching for scarecrow links I came across the following article in the Cambridge press stating that Barton Mills holds the record with over 1000 scarecrows !!!)
A VILLAGE which won a place in the Guinness Book of Records for its Scarecrow Festival is preparing for this year's event. Villagers at Barton Mills have been busy cutting out masks for the faces of the scarecrows which will go on display at the event this weekend.This year's festival will be the third to have been held by the village. The money raised goes towards the village church preservation trust. Last year's festival won the village a place in the record book for the most straw figures displayed. More than 1,000 scarecrows depicting people and animals were on display. Lis Brotherton, one of the organisers of the event, said that the village was not aiming to break any records this year. But one of the features will be a scarecrow congregation in the church. Some of the churchgoers are making masks of their own faces to be put on scarecrows, which will be dressed in the person's own clothes. The festival will also feature open gardens, music and a barbecue. An outdoor scarecrow songs of praise event is also planned
