June
28th 2003 saw the start of the fourth Thornton Hough scarecrow event.
The event ran for the whole week and culminated in the Scarecrow Fete on Saturday 5th of July. During the
weeklong festival it was also possible to see The Mersey Morris Men and
Mockbeggers Ladies Clog Dancers perfoming at the Seven Sters pub in the
centre of the village, and on the Saturday a feast of local bands including
a "New Orleans Jazz Band, Merseyside Police band and Wirral School's
concert Band also appeared ..
After
2002's heavily Harry Potter themed display the big question on my first
visit was what would be the theme this year ?... and I have to say that
I was pleasantly suprised to see that there was a lot more variety in
the displays, although I did get the feeling that there were less Scarecrows
this year. This was perhaps partly due to the weather which contrived
to be typically British during the week of the event.... nontheless the
event remains a great day out for any visitors to the area and I heartily
recomend it to people of all ages. I especially enjoyed a number of
the cleverer scarecorws such as "Status Crow" and "Blair
Crow" as well as the "Help I'm a celebrity get me out of here"
display... which included Wayne Sleep in the toilet. There were also a
number of topical presentations including the Royal Intruder crashing
Prince Williams 18th Birthday party... Basically I can't wait to see what
next year has to offer.
I
have included a number of pictures of the scarecrows in the was 2003
gallery, for anyone who wishes to view more of the scarecrows from
the 2003 festival.
