I attended my first scarecrow festival at Thornton Hough
in the summer of 1999, when I happened to drive through the village on a
sunny Friday evening. I was struck by the sight of a more than 20 foot high
female with lipstick and traffic cone cleavage, staring at me over a hedge
as I drove along, and pulled over to the side of the road to investigate
more.
The festival in July 2000 was a follow on from the one the previous year
with the village attempting to break the world record for scarecrows gathered
in one place. They achieved this goal by amassing a total of 700 scarecrows
and this was despite the fact that around a dozen were destroyed by
vandals the night before the festival. The event was organised as a fund
raising event for the local community and attracted attention in local and
regional press.
We were unable to attend on the Saturday but paid a quick visit on the
Sunday when unfortunately it poured with rain. Practically
every house in the village had a scarecrow outside its front door and
a number of front gardens had scenes laid out on them. Scarecrows hung
from trees, crawled out of holes in the ground, emerged from wheelie bins,
and in one case one was shown as if trapped under the bonnet of a car.
Hats off to the locals for a great event with loads of time and thought going into the event..It will certainly become an annual trip for my family and I.
