This section of the site will be updated on a monthly basis with observations and thoughts on the previous month. You can also receive a copy of each monthly update by signing up to our Mailing list. In future months I hope to include more information on events in and around the village, so if you know of any then please email me at webhost@oxtonvillage.com
September 2001...The village ..it is a Changin'
Roads around Oxton currently awash with greens and reds
With Halloween and Christmas merchandise begining to appear in shops around the area, and the nights starting to draw in, it looks like 'summer' is finally over. I have also noticed an increasing number of leaves congregating in my path, on their annual pilgrimage to my front door!!. It is at this time of the year that the colours of the village start to change, as Rose Mount, Victoria Mount, Mount Pleasant and many of the other roads containing trees and bushes, change from green to brown and orange. To mark this event I have removed the summer theme from the site and added the 'brown' Autumn theme.
It was during October last year that I first added this theme to the site and looking back I also note that it was around this time that the village (and the rest of the country) was ravaged by 90 miles per hour winds which robbed us of many of these colours, lets hope that this is not repeated again this year!!
Other village news includes the withdrawal of the planning application for twelve new flats in Claughton Firs, an application which had attracted a petition and numerous resident complaints. I will obviously be keeping an eye out on developments and keeping the site up to date with any details. The Shrewsbury Arms is allegedly being re furnished at the moment, so far I have noticed that the beer garden has been cut back and that a picture is missing from the wall in the non smoking section of the pub. I have also noticed that a number of changes are taking place at the Queens Hotel. Currently the archway over the front porch appears to be missing., so it will be interesting to follow what is happening there.
During the month I have added the second of my pages to the Roads around Oxton part of the site with a write up on Victoria Mount. I am hoping to move onto some of the 'smaller roads' around the village during October before concentrating on Rose Mount itself and some of the other large roads in and around the centre of the village. As part of this process I am updating the details on the Shops and traders in the village and hope to get out around the village to ensure that their details are correctly displayed on the site. I am also aware that some of the pictures of these shops and restaurants could do with updating and should be doing this at the same time
One event due this month is a talk at the RAFA club on 24th October as a fundraising attempt by the Oxton Society. The evening will be about "Oxton on the Internet" and will include a presentation by myself on the development of the Oxton Village site, as well as an opportunity to discuss potential developments that could be made to effectively utilise the internet in the area with memebers of the Oxton Society. It is hoped that we can keep this event at a 'non tecky' and informal level and all are welcome.
Finally keep an eye out at the end of October as the site will take on a Halloween theme with a monster and ghost hunt also planned.
