September Thoughts - Time is on my Side ?

Collage of Ariel pictures from Christchurch Spire

I sat down to do this months thoughts and realised that it is now six months since I began the site. So I thought I'd do a little summary of the past months and what has happened since I started the sight.

The site was published at the end of March this year, and my first monthly thoughts section was written at the end of April. In that first report I voiced my concerns over the number of shops closing in the village. It is nice to see that since then we have had a number of new establishments opening, the most recent opening being that of the Holistic shop in Christchurch road. Back in March I also mentioned that I may, at some time in the future, set up a chat room on the site ... well I've finally got round to it and the Village Chat room was published earlier this month. I have yet to receive any feedback on wether or not people are using it, but I hope that this can become a good place for people to meet and chat about Oxton... so please tell anyone who would be interested to drop on by.

My main topic of concern in May was the number of houses for sale in the Village notably in Claughton Firs. The picture on the review showed  four flats for sale at the end of the road. Only one sign remains this month, soon to go as it says "Sold" across the top of it. The weather proved a major topic during May and on into June. June also saw the arrival of Team Rocket to my garden. Two enourmous pidgeons. It was also the month that I registered the oxtonvillage.com domain name and was given a set of ariel pictures of the village taken from the top of Christchurch spire from Brian in Oxton Computers.

In July the site received its 1000th hit and I reported that  the Co-op in Christchurch Road was to repoen in the near future as 'Complimentary Health Centre". The shop opened at the start of September and has now been added to the shops sction of the site. I also began to think about the origins of some of the place names in Oxton and this prompted me to set up the "mysteries of Oxton" section of the site in August. It is hoped that this section can be used to build up local gossip and information on Oxton and the surrounding area. We have already been requested to find out the origins of "The Arno".

Well that just about brings me up to date with the progress of the site except to mention the Oxton Society. The Oxton Society is a local society concerned with conservation issues in the Oxton Conservation area. I joined the society earlier this year and this site now publishes copies of communications from them including the regular newsletters. The society can be contacted on the email address oxtonsociety@oxtonvillage.com. This month the society have announced a number of upcoming events, these are listed on the village noticeboard with more details in the Societies emails section
