October Thoughts - Oxton in the fell

House and trees in Victoria Mount (pre-savaged)

The Oxton Village online site received a facelift this month as I replaced the "green leaf" summer theme with an Autumnal look.  I also decided that the front page of the site looked a bit 'tired' and so I will be updating it more regularily with collages of pictures throughout the coming weeks. At the moment the front page is showing a Halloween theme, and I have set up a little game of find the spiders throughout the site. so why not see if you can find all ten hidden spiders most are easy but there are a couple of well hidden ones.

In addition to the online sites layout being drastically updated, the real Oxton Village also received a facelift at the end of October. The way things are looking at the moment with these 90 miles per hour gusts of wind , it looks like I'll have to replace the leaves throughout the site with twigs and bare branches!! Which is a pity really, as the village was entering one of its most colourful phases of the year, what the Americans term The Fall, after such a torrent of weather over the past month I thought that it would be better to describe it as 'The Fell' - lets hope we get some snow later on in the year to  make up for it.

The Mysteries of Oxton section wasn't quite working in the way in which I intended it too, and I've decided to stop developing this section for the moment. I may return to it some time next year. In the meantime for anyone out there interested in the history of the village there is a talk this month in the R.A.F.A. club on Alton Road on 1st November about the Historic houses of Oxton by Joy Hockey a local architect and historian.

I have decided that, as well as updating the gallery with new pictures, I will concentrate on the noticeboard and events side of the site for the next couple of months in the lead up to Christmas As such I have set up a Christmas events form that can be accessed from the village wall. During the next week I will be putting up details on bonfire night activities in and around the area... so any feedback on these events of Christmas would be greatly appreciated. Most of the restaurants in the village already have their Christmas menus in the windows and we have published the Villa Jazz menu as part of its webpage . Villa Jazz are also currently advertising a Halloween Menu for any interested parties.

One useful addition to the village over the past two months has been the building of a cash till into the wall of the HSBC bank in the centre of the village. After the recent reduction in opening hours of this branch, are we potentially going to see the closure of this bank in the future ? If this were to happen I wonder what the building could be used for  instead ? What I have noticed is that the notice board infront of the bank seems to be regularily updated with Oxton Society events so if your in the village don't forget to stop and have a look (alternatively check out the Oxton Society section of the website)

Finally, for recent visitors to the site you may have noticed the inclusion of a Webbieworld banner on the left hand side of the main page. Over the past couple of months the hits that the site has been receiving have been reducing so I have decided to try and get a couple of awards for the site and hopefully attract more visitors. So if you have time when you stop by the site please vote for us by clicking on the banner.
