May 2001 - Secret Gardens, Tractors and Towers

With the census completed and everyone waiting eagerly for the results, plus Tranmere Rovers finally bowing out of the first division, as Liverpool completed an historic treble of cup wins, we moved into May, and election fever gripped the country (well everyone was interested for a moment .. when the egg was thrown!!).

During May I managed to attend two events held in the village. The first was at the suprisingly sunny May Bank holiday at the start of the month where a fundraising day was held at St Saviours church. The highlight of this event for me being the opportunity to travel to the top of the Church Tower and take some pictures of the surrounding area. The second event was the highly successfull Secret Gardens of Oxton day orgainsed by the Oxton Society which gave locals the opportunity to view some of the gardens at the top end of the village. I have added pictures and a commentary on both these events to the ever growing village trips section of the website.

On the same day as the Secret Gardens tour, Claughton Firs rang out to the sound of a tractor digging test holes, and people with clipboards taking measurements at the Firs Garage which is currently up for sale. I have kept an eye out on the local government planning permission site to see if any plans have been submitted, but as yet none have been lodged. Rumour has it, that it is to have four houses built on it.... Anyway I had a topical suggestion for a use for the space..if there are any local millionaires, or recent lottery winners, out there ..or maybe we could apply for lottery funding ? ..wouldn't it be nice to knock down the existing building and turn the area into a village green,  with benches, trees and grassed areas, rather than construct more buildings. .. we could create another "not so secret garden" in the centre of Oxton Village... just a thought !!

Have a good june and lets hope the recently improving weather situation continues
