May Thoughts - A Village for Sale ?

It's been a funny old month really, for the first couple of weeks it felt like Summer was really here, with the sun cracking the flags and people 'supping ale' outside the Oxton Arms, Shrew and Caernarvon Castle, however the second half of the month seems to have consisted of showers and overcast days punctuated with the odd sunny day.... it is now May 31st and I'm sitting looking out of my window at a rain soaked street.. lets hope June improves.. although one 'by product of this is that the hedges have grown and flowers are sprouting in all the village gardens.

One observation that I have is the number of houses that seem to be for sale around the village. I live in Claughton Firs and at one stage this month there were seven for sale signs up in the road. It is a mark of the popularity of the area that four of those residencies have now been sold ! .. Looking further a field there seems to be new signs going up on a weekly basis. However, not that I'm trying to stop people selling houses, but wouldn't it be nice if the estate agencies put up signs that blended in with the village as a whole? Given that the very fact that the houses are in the village seems to sell themselves anyway, do we really have to have bright red and blue boards overhanging the pavements of every road in the village ? and couldn't the signs be a bit smaller ? One other thing that I note is the cost of some of the houses in and around the area. Today it was announced that the average house price in Britain had risen to £100k, and I have to say that some of the houses that I've seen advertised do seem a 'tad overpriced'

The annual general meeting of the Oxton Society took place this month and you can find my unofficial minutes of it in the conservation section of the site. I have 'made contact' with the Society and hopefully in the future should be advertising some of their events.

The site itself seems to be attracting a reasonable amount of hits, we set ourselves a target of 200 hits per month for the first six months and as you can see we have more than achieved that target. New sections worth mentioning are the wots new section which will be updated whenever we add or update anything in the site. A gallery section was added this month and I intend to add pictures to this throughout July, my other main task for June will be to optimise some of the pages so that they download faster. In the meantime, any comment (good or bad) on the site will be gratefully received.

Two other areas currently underdeveloped were the Tranmere Rovers and Young persons area (Yoyo) ... these have received a major facelift and should both be  published during the first weekend of June.

Well that's it for now ... next month I intend to add more details on events in the village, in the meantime keep an eye on the Wots new and Village Noticeboard sections for any news.
