March 2003 - Rebuilding Oxton

Webhost ramblings ..The village centre is to spend the next few months undergoing a number of major building projects . The junction of Village Road and Rose Mount is currently being restructured by the council, with the addition of a new island in the middle of the road, and the pavement outside the HSBC Bank being extended out into the road. The conversion of the Old Dye works in Prices lane is also scheduled to start in April, and the building of Roklis Manor in Claughton Firs finally got underway on the 31st of March ....of course the big question is, will it all be completed by the time we reach the annual Secret Gardens event in May ?

Oxton Society AGM ..The annual general meeting of the Society took place in March with the existing committe members re-elected . There was also a report from Alan Chape on the Village centre study to look at ways of improving the Village, this includes plans to address the parking problems, possibly allowing for greater use of the car park in the Oxton Arms. Many of the plans for the centre of the village are heavily dependant upon the traders in the village. A presentation was also given by Jeremy Watson on his work to look to get the Oxton postal address reinstated.Residents of the Spring Villas area voiced their concern over the action which appeared to have taken place with regards to the opening up of a pathway in the area. It was suggested that more use of the noticeboard in the HSBC car park could help ensure that non members, as well as members, of the soceity could be kept up to date on events (of course anyone is welcome to leave their thoughts on the village noticeboard).

The Oxton Plaque : The first winner of this Oxton Society award for positive promotion, and enhancement of Oxton was announced at the society AGM, where members voted The Drawing Room conversion in Christchurch Road into first place, and amidst tears and raptuous applause, the first award was given...nominations are welcome for next years award ..why not leave your thoughts on the village noticeboard.

Prices Lance is to close for six weeks from 5th of April  as part of the conversion of the Olde Dye Works. Keep an eye out for some exclusive pictures of what is happening, and also keep your fingers crossed that the road is open in readiness for the Secret Gardens event at the start of May.

The Secret gardens of Oxton 2003 : this highly successful event is due to take place on 11th May, and promises to be bigger and better than ever. As well as more than ten gardens on show, visitors will also be able to view and purchase local Arts and carftswork which will be displayed in the Oxton Arms car Park. ....as well as the Art work there will also be a book stall (currently having around 1000 books on it) and a raffle... rumour has it that we may well also be visited by the Mayor during the event. Tickets for the event are currently being sold, and anyone wishing to offer their services can do so by contacting the Society directly (See the Society web pages for more information)

St Saviours organ recital : on the same day as the secret gardens event there will be an organ recital in St Saviours Church details of this event can be found in the churhc and are also included on the posters for the gardens event.

Easter theme .. keep an eye out over the coming weeks as the site undergoes a makeover with a new Easter theme.

Why not leave a message on this board.

Looking back : This time last year I was preparing the site for Easter and reporting that the Claughton Firs planning application was being resubmitted, and the leylandii cutting down appeal petition had just begun. Two years ago the site was celebrating its first birthday ,and also its 3000th hit. In 2001 I ran an Easter egg hunt on the site and in 2002 I issued a challenge asking people to count the number of Conservation signs in the village ... keep an eye out over the coming weeks for the 2003 Easter theme which should be appearing on the site soon.
