June 2003 - The baskets arrive and I launch another appeal.

Webhost ramblings ..I thought I'd renew one of my previous appeals for information on Oxton again this month - are there any visitors to the site who have any local information and/or pictures of Oxton that I could add to the site? Basically at the moment I am aware that much of the content of the site is presented from my personal perspective. Given that I have only lived in the area for the past ten years, surely someone out there could provide me with thoughts on the village (past and present) and a few pictures of the village centre.
For example I believe that a number of years ago there used to be a 'fete' that ran in Rose Mount .. has anyone got any pictures. Basically if you can help please email me on webhost@oxtonvillage.com

Oxton Village Fete - Details for this event, which was first held last year, have begun to appear throughout the village. It will take place on the Arno Recreation ground behind Sainsburys on the weekend of the 30th to the 31st of August. The organisers of the event are looking for sponsorship and any people who wish to have stalls at the event or help with it are asked to contact Carl on 0151 653 3823 or alternatively why not go to the fundraiser event on the 10th of July at Birkenhead cricket Club
A new topic has been added to the community noticeboard with information on the event. If anyone has any more details or comments then feel free to add them.

The hanging baskets appeared on the lampposts in the centre of the village during the month and have added a touch of colour to the street scene. These hve been followed up with a number of further baskets appearing outside a number of front doors, the ones on the Shrewsbury Arms looking particularily fetching. I will be travelling round during the month (Assuming we have at least one sunny day) and setting up a Hanging Baskets of Oxton gallery of pictures at some time during the month.

Events in the Area during July include ... The third annual scarecrow festival in Thornton Hough and surrounding area. This event runs over the week commencing 29th June and finishes on Sunday 6th July. The main village fete is scheduled for Saturday 5th with a number of events taking place including prize givings. This years event has attempted to address the problems caused by traffic congestion by operating a "Park and Ride" and one way scheme during the event, so any visitors to the area should keep an eye out for the relevant signs on their approach to the village. Once again I will be looking to add pictures of the event to the Scarecrows website which also contains some pictures from the previous shows

Post Code Campaign - The campaign for the reinstatement of Oxton as a postal district is continuing to gain momentum. This has been taken up with local councillors and representation is being made through the Oxton Society to a number of different parties. The village noticeboard contains more information on this and I will be adding a page to the site over the coming month explaing how locals can help.

Looking back :June 2002 included a reference to the Soccer World Cup ..and here we are two years later and David Bekham is still front page news. The page also included mention of the Summer Pops event in the Albert dock remenising on the fact that I had missed the opportunity to see Bob Dylan in 2001. But it was way back in June 2000 that I first issued my warning about the potential arial attacks from two massive pidgeons that had suddenly appeared in my back garden, the twosome being nicknamed "Team Rocket". I had also added a number of ariel "team rocket" views of Oxton taken from the top of Christchurch spire to the art gallery.
