June Thoughts - Team Rocket Strikes
After spending much of last months thoughts talking about the weather I've decided to try to avoid it this month. On the gossip front, the Village Barbers in Claughton Firs closed this month after a brief spell in Claughton Firs, I understand that it has been re-leased already. Rumours abound that the Shrewsbury Arms may be due for a touch up on the outside, and it is nice to see that the Queens Hotel has renewed it's flower displays over the front door, although the signs on the side of the building could do with a quick painting. I've noticed lately that there appears to have been an outbreak of graffitti on a couple of walls off Prices Lane in the centre of the village, lets hope that something gets done about this sooner rather than later.
The big news for this month is that the site is now officially a Dot Com sight. You can now access the site either by typing www.oxton-village.co.uk or www.oxtonvillage.com I'm in the process of setting up .com email addresses, and these should be appearing in the sight soon. To mark this occassion a couple of flyers have been placed in the windows of Cottams and the Post Office advertising the site, hopefully this will attract even more visitors.
Anyway onto the theme of this months update... Team Rocket. Those of you with young children may have some idea who Team Rocket are, but for those of you who don't know I'll ellaborate. Team Rocket are the 'bad guys' in the Pokemon cartoon, TV series, Film, Sticker collection, Nintendo Game etc. They basically keep popping up and trying to steal Pokemons off Ash (the hero).. what has this got to do with Oxton, I hear you ask ?.. well ever since I moved to Oxton I have enjoyed sunny afternoons sitting in my back garden, or walking around the village, listening to the birds singing in the trees and watching them fly by. However, the village appears to have adopted two rather large pidgeons lately, who are regulars in my back garden, and constantly seem to frighten the other birds away, and they have been nicknamed Jessie and James, the names of the members of Team Rocket. A stroll in my back garden has also confirmed that it is being well manured by the 'teamsters', and believe me, they leave 'rocket sized' droppings .. so be carefull out there when your taking a short cut up Prices Lane, and keep your eyes peeled, I would suggest that a hat or umbrella may be approprite.... You have been warned !!
I
have recently received a number of ariel pictures of the village taken by Brian
and Darren at Oxton Computers and these should be appearing in the site over
the next month. They were taken from the top of Christchurch Spire when it was
being fixed last year, so keep an eye out for these during July and if you have
any pictures or stories concerning the village please get in touch.

Junes picture of the month was supposed to be a picture of Team Rocket, however the minute I decided to take a picture of them they stopped appearing in my garden, preffering instead to taunt my camera lense from a nearby tree !! ... I have therefore included a picture of the "scaffolded" spire of Christ Church, this is one of the pictures supplied by Brian and Darren at Oxton computers. |
