July Thoughts - The Hidden Mysteries of Oxton ?

Due to holiday commitments and other work I'm afraid that the update has been slightly rushed this month.

On July 29th the site reached four figures with its 1000th hit since its launch at the start of April, at an average of over 250 hits per month. I originally set myself a target of 200 hits per month for the first six months raising to 300 over the next six months, so am quite pleased at the attention received so far. Over the next few months I intend to start contacting local Churches and Schools to see if they would like to contribute to the site. If there is anyone out there who would like to submit articles, or suggestions for the site, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

The views from a village spire section of the site seems to have been pretty favourably received, and hopefully I should get round to putting some more images up in the near future.  I am hoping to add a couple of new sections in August one of which is outined below.

Recently a couple of locals placed some comments on the village guestbook and contact board. The theme of these comments were along the lines of what does it take to be considered a local. I only moved to Oxton Village around five years ago so many of the comments they were passing were lost on me, however it got me thinking along the lines of a new section that I could set up on the site, of useful local 'titbits' .For example, what are the origins of some of the local street names - i.e. we have Bennets Hill (who was Bennet?). Prices Lane (Why ?). I know that there used to be a dairy near the centre of the village (does anyone out there have any information on that?). The Oxton Society is to hold a local history talk sometime in November so hopefully I can pick up some information there. But in the meantime could anyone with any snippets of information please get in touch and share them with me so that I can add them to the site.

On the local news front it looks like the old co-op which was recently revamped is to open as a 'holistic centre' details of this can be found in the village guestbook. Once more details are known I will add them to the site. The Shrewsbury Arms also held one of it's charity Barbeques at the end of July which appeared to be well attended. The site has also been updated with the Oxton Society Summer newsletter which contains quite a bit of local news on the Conservation front.

This months picture is not strictly an Oxton Village picture but was taken at the recent Thornton Hough Scarecrow festival, where the event managed to break the world record for the number of scarecrows gathered in one place with over 700 !! ...  I will add a couple of further images to the gallery during August. ... Whatever happened to the Oxton Village fete ???
