February 2003 - Shops Flats and Society news

Webhost ramblings ..Would you believe it.. it's March already …how time flies by when it's raining. Not much to report on the web development front this month. I finally managed to get the annual review up for 2002 the other day. I also reindexed the site during January and changed the layout of the village diary main page.

The main news for the month was the granting of permission for the building of the flats in Claughton Firs, so hopefully I will be able to follow the progress of this development over the year. It appears that the new development is to be called Broklis Manor and will commence during the next month, taking approximately eight months to complete. Although I accept that something has to be done with the site it will mean that the above view of Liverpool will effectively lost to the existing houses of Claughton Firs.

A new shop also opened in the centre of the village, the imaginatively titled Ox"tan sunbeds which opened opposite the Oxton Arms in Claughton Firs.

Oxton Society Events ..There appear to be a number of Oxton Society events taking place in the coming months including the annual general meeting on the 25th of March and the secret gardens event on the 11th of May. Don't forget that you can get more information by looking at the Societies own pages.

The Oxton Plaque : On the same day as the nominations for the oscars were made I received a note through my front door to tell me that the Oxton Village site had received a nomination for a new award to be offered by the Oxton Society. There will be an opportunity for members of the society to vote on the winner of this award at the AGM and it is hoped that it can become an annual event aimed at promoting Oxton.

Details of the other nominations are given below.
1) 29a Fairview Road : double sandstone wall lining long driveway
2) 47 Rose Mount : Lean-to garage replaced by period garage forecourt
3) 53/53a Claughton Firs : second hand shop converted into living accommodation
4) Oxton Village web site : information on the Internet about a range of village activities
5) Victoria Mount : dilapidated streetlights replaced with effective standards by Wirral Council
6) 50 Christchurch Road : conversion of the Co-op shop via the Holistic Centre to The Drawing Room
7) 24 Village Road : restoration to improve exterior views of the building

Hit Count

Total This Year ...824
Total in February ...429
Average hits this year..412

.Did you know Oxton ..and Burton are the only two Wirral villages whose names have remained unchanged for the last eight centuries. Which makes it all the more puzzling why the postal service decided to remove the Oxton postal district a couple of years ago. this month the Oxton Society announced that it was hoping to spearhead a campaign to get it re-instated .. see the Community noticeboard to leave your comments and thoughts.

The Review of 2002 ...has finally been completed and shows that the site managed to outperform the 2001 growth and finally achieve an average of over 400 hits per month

Oxton Reunited ... one of the interactive sections of the site. Have you left Oxton and lost touch with locals or would you like to set up a reunion.

Why not leave a message on this board.

This time last year ..I was reporting on the fact that Oxton had hit the national press over the case of the Oxton leylandii. The tractors had also moved in to Claughton Firs and knocked down the garage in readiness for the building of the flats.

Two years ago ..well believe it or not the 20th February 2001 was the date that saw Tranmere  Rovers stage one of the greatest comebacks in F.A.Cup history when they came from 3-0 down to defeat Southampton 4-3 in the fifth round of the F.A. Cup
