August 2003 - Flats go up and Restaurants Close!

Webhost ramblings ..All in all August was a pretty hectic month for myself and family with the bi-annual family holiday to the Cotswolds at the start and a trip to Disneyland Paris at the end of the month, and as a result this months diary offerings are a rather rushed affair, having originally planned for them to be completed prior to my second trip.
In Oxton the buildings continued to develop and rumours have abounded as two restaurants appear to have closed within the village during the month. On top of this the football season started with Tranmere Rovers looking for a good start to the season in an attempt to get back to the First Division. So I shall crack on with the diary and hope that everyone else has had a fun month.

Late News ...Meeting Saturday 6 September 10.30am at St Winifred's Church, Westbourne Road.
You are invited to a meeting called by local residents to meet Frank Field MP and local councilor and to discuss the mess at the junction of Balls Road and Oxton Road. What's happening to the Congregational Church? Why has such a disaster been allowed to develop with collapsed and demolished buildings and Ridley Street still closed?
Although the location is outside the Conservation Area, The Society has commented on related plans as we feel there are crucial geographical, visual and architectural links between the two. It is appalling that this key junction has been allowed to become an eyesore. The Society will be represented at the meeting and we hope you will attend. Imminent ward boundary changes will put this area inside Oxton - residents of both have good cause to join together to achieve something positive.

Roklis Manor - reached the second floor during the month and my view of the Liverpool skyline has now completely gone from my first floor vantage point. The view just remains from the top floor of the house but I suspect that I will be saying Au-revoir to this sometime during September. It will be interesting to see how fast the remainder of the flats are erected, and also when these will be completed, plus where the "Landscaped gardens are to be housed". The big question is why is this new building called Roklis Manor ? ...anyone out there who knows please contact me so I can add this to the site.

Luxury Apartments in Prices Lane- during the month I actually managed to get a sneak peak at one of these flats. I would have to conclude that they're not really to my taste being slightly on the small side but know doubt in the current climate they will probably sell quite fast. There is currently a "discussion" underway with regards to the car park in Prices Lane which sits opposite this new development. As I understand it the residents of the Lane are looking to purchase it whilst the builders of the new development are also showing an interest in it. If there is anyone out there who can give me an update on this then feel free to email me or add info to the Community Noticeboard.

Restaurants Close - as mentioned earlier it appears that two restaurants have been closed in the village during the month. Beadles, Oxtons Egon Ronay recommended restaurant which also displayed a number of pictures by local artists on its walls appears well and truly closed with the ground floor completely emptied out. The "rumour" being that this will be sold off for office space. The other restaurant looking set to close is The Ristoranta Roma which appears to have closed its doors, although the tables are still set inside it. Obviously the loss of two restaurants is a major blow to the village and it will be interesting to see what replaces them.

Tranmere Rovers - started the season with what can only be described as an indifferent start with a win three draws and a loss (Their first since February last year), however it is too early to predict how the season will pan out and hopefully we can get things moving onwards and upwards during the coming months... keep an eye out for the newly signed Ivory Coast international Eugene Dadi who seems to have been an instant hit at the start of the season both on and off the pitch, with the club already cashing in on his name with a new T-Shirt containing the slogan "Who's Ya Dadi"

Hit Count
Total This Year ...3536
Total in August ...390
Average hits this year..449

Do you have anything with an Oxton related theme that you would like to talk about or need to contact anyone about anything on a village related subject.. or maybe you just want to say hello ?

feel free to leave a message on on the village noticeboard.

Looking back : Did you know that two years ago in August 2001 the Conservation signs were added to lampposts around Oxton .. and two years later I still haven't found out how many there are out there. I did however suggest that these could possibly be used as points of reference for walks around the village. Don't forget that if you want to join in on discussing the Oxton Walks then a meeting will be held at the RAFA Club - Friday 26 September from 7.30pm
