April 2003 - The rebuilding begins..and Oxton prepares.

Webhost ramblings ..Oxton village spent much of April being over run by roadworks, men at work, and traffic cones. The rebuilding of the junction between Rose Mount and Village road began to take shape, plus the foundations for the flats in Claughton Firs began to appear. Scaffolding in Prices Lane signaled the beginning of the conversion of the old Dye Works into studio apartments, and all this in the run up to probably the biggest annual event in the village calendar, the Secret Gardens of Oxton (more later).
The Tranmere Rovers football team also looked likely to provide an impact on the Secret Gardens event as they continued to push for the promotion playoffs from Division Two. If they had managed to get themselves up to sixth or fifth position, then they would have been playing a home playoff game on the same day as the event... an opportunity for football fans from far an wide to walk round some of the village gardens ...that would have been fun !!.

Third annual Secret Gardens Event this years proceedings will take place on Sunday the 11th of May from 10:00 a.m to 5 p.m.with Eighteen gardens being opened to the public in an attempt to raise money for Charity and the village Christmas lights. Last years event saw around ten gardens open and I would say that it probably took a good hour to visit them all, so it would definitely make sense to allow plenty of time to get round them. Tickets are available from Patrick Toosey 20, Rose Mount (0151 652 1653) and Sara Ewing at the Drawing Room in Christchurch Road (0151 652 8452). Tickets are £4 for adults and children are free, plus they also include a free map.

Entertainment at the event will include a Jazz band and Brass Band in the HSBC car park and a number of arts and crafts displays in the Oxton Arms car park, as well as this there will be refreshments a plant sale, a second hand books stall (over 1000 books to date) and a Chines raffle.

Organ Recital at Christchurch .. also on the 11th of May there will be an Organ recital at Christchurch during the afternoon, together with floral displays and teas, with the Church opening from 12:00 to 17:00, so as part of your walk round the gardens why not pop in for a relaxing moment and enjoy the atmosphere.

But what's the weather going to do ? ... well this was taken from a useful website which will probably prove more accurate as the event nears. "There will be lots of unsettled weather during the next 2 weeks. Temperatures are expected to be close to average for the time of year, with rainfall amounts much higher than the average through the period. Pressure will be mostly low. Sunshine amounts should be much below the average" http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/.(look for the Regional Forecast for the North West)....keep your fingers crossed.

Looking back : This time last year I was reporting that Oxton had failed to get a mention in the national or local press after the coverage the village received with the Leylandii tree. However the village Post Office had received coverage over its threatened closure (It's still open). The road surface at the top of Rose Mount was being resurfaced and I also included a picture teaser of the sign in Prices Lane for the Olde Dye Works, which raises the question...what has happened to this plaque now that the wall it was on has been knocked down ?
