2001 - Will Oxton Village Officially Disappear!!!
This months picture shows the row of houses in Newburns Lane at the
top of Rose Mount (Behind the Queens Hotel)
I played around with it to make it look older but I actually took the picture
last year
Over the past few weeks the news and radio has been alive with commentary and thoughts on the current 'Count me in' Census of Britain.. The Welsh were refusing to fill in their forms because there isn't a box for Wales but is one for Scotland and Ireland, another internet site is telling people to put Jedi Warrior in religion, plus Terry Wogan is advocating we all enter 'Togg' so that he can claim some tax benefits. There is, however, one part of the survey that I think has a direct bearing on the residents of Oxton Village. Recently the government redefined postcodes in the North West and ,if I remember rightly, at the same time Oxton Village was moved into either Prenton or Birkenhead. Although mail is still sent with the Oxton and Oxton Village address on it I believe that this is actually incorrect and should not be used. As such, when filling in and filing of the census forms is completed if everyone actually enters their correct address will this mean that Oxton Village will officially disappear and have a population of zero in the year 2001 ? ...and as such would that mean that the only Oxton Village remaining would be the virtual one at www.oxtonvillage.com ?... does anyone want to sign up for the virtual village council, or village mayor.. and meet at the village community centre.. or virtual Shrewsbury arms for a virtual pint ??? .just a thought.
Other local news includes the Secret Oxton Gardens event which is taking place on 19th May around some of the gardens of Oxton. For more details see the Oxton Society section of the site. I am hoping to get round some of the gardens and if I am permitted will probably put some images from them on the site later this month. The event is being run to help raise funds for the local Oxton Conservation society.
I gave the site an Easter theme during April ,which I have now removed, and also added a quiz. I'm not sure how many people actually looked at the quiz as I haven't received any feedback, however I have decided to leave the quiz on the site for the time being. During May I am hoping to get round to some of the local shop and businesses with a view to updating their details on the site, and also get some better pictures (weather permitting). Once I get these I will also begin to add more pictures and details to the Oxton Gallery, and downloads, sections of the site. In the meantime I have added two more calendars for May to the downloads section and also added this month a new section for miscellaneous pictures, however most of these pictures are not actually new to the site as they were previously in the gallery.
