As I sat in my back garden relaxing one weekend in August I suddenly heard the cries of "Two ! Two !" and "Cumm'on Tranmere". I knew that Tranmere Rovers were playing Leicester that afternoon and assumed that the noise was coming from Prenton Park, however ,closer investigation revealed a bowls match taking place at the Conservative Club in Village Road.
So, camera in hand, I ran round and took the following pictures. Unfortunately I had to leave before the end and didn't even find out who was playing but I have to say that everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and the place was a hive of activity.
Where Did my Balls go ? Two competitors cross in mid green running towards opposite corners of the green, obviously looking for their last delivery ... whilst a lonely bowl sits in the foreground ... The fans look on bemused with pints in hand, wondering ..." Should we tell them where it went ?" The green at the Conservative club is a crown green and looks in excelent condition. There is a pavillion to the side of it (seen in the picture on the left)., and on the other two sides are seats for spectators. The Conservative club itself occupies the fourth side of the green and provides a balcony view of the procedures. |
Spectators
watch from the side of the green as a another player sends down a wood to
the far end. This picture was taken next to the Commermorative gates erected
at the front of the club in 1982 to mark its centenary. The Conservative
club itself has existed in the village since 1882 when it was founded and
run from 16 Claughton Firs, it moved to its current position in 1897.
Below is a montage of images from the play ... does anyone know who was playing and what the final score was ??
